How do I obtain a referral?
Step 1
Meet with your primary care physician and discuss the issue.
You may not even need to see a specialist!
Step 2
Allow for a minimum of 2 weeks for electronic/online insurance referral processing via your insurance company's guidelines
Step 3
Schedule your office visit with the specialist
REFERRALS TO SPECIALISTS:
-
As of January 1, 2019 most insurers are now requiring an electronic/online referral for patients to see any specialists. This has resulted in an inordinate amount of additional time-consuming paperwork for primary care physicians offices as most get hundreds of requests daily for referrals.
-
When our office makes an electronic referral, it's up to the specialist's office to retrieve it electronically from the web site of the insurer. Many offices are not familiar with this process and tend to blame the PCP for not sending in the referral which is not the case.
-
If the referral is for a new problem, you will need to see your PCP first to evaluate the new problem. A referral will be made to a specialist only if the PCP determines that you need to see one.
-
Please be patient and notify us of your insurance companies mandate for an electronic/online referral at least 2 weeks before your office visit with the specialist.
